The hitch
How to tie a new hitch
The hitch on a leather whip is a series of half hitches, there are a number of ways to tie a new hitch. You will need 80mm or more leather to tie a new hitch, a hitch should be as narrow as possible, not bulky. The way I have shown below works on all leather whips.
How to tie a new hitch
This knot will be demonstrated on a 4 plait kangaroo whip, the same knot can be done on any number of strands and any type of leather.
Put the new fall over the thong.

Hook the whip on something strong.
Arrange the strands as demonstrated in the picture and hold the fall against the back, make sure the fall has no twists in it.
Start the knot about half way up the fall. Grab the highest strand, wrap it around the fall and all the other strands and back through, pointing the strand towards the fall end (towards you).
Pull it tight (top view).

Grab the next highest strand, wrap it around everything back through, pointing the strand to the end of the fall.

Now wrap the third strand the same. If you have more than a four plait then do the rest of the strands the same way, apart from the last strand.

The last strand goes around everything back through pointing towards the handle. Pull tight.
Put some leather dressing on the fall behind the knot.
Pull the fall through, almost to the end.
Put the last strand you tied through the slit in the fall and pull the rest of the fall through until it stops.
Trim all the strands.

Back and front view of hitch, you may have to practice doing this knot a few times before it looks good.
